Unraveling Life’s Code: Tsoumakidou Lab at the SCIENCE DAY "PHYSICS FAIR".
On Science Day at Protipo Ekpaideftirio Athinon, the Tsoumakidou Lab from BSRC Fleming brought the wonders of biology to life, captivating young minds with a journey into the microscopic world of DNA and tissues.
The day began with a thought-provoking question: What makes us unique? The answer, of course, lies in our DNA—the intricate "instruction manual" that shapes every living organism. In an engaging talk, the team introduced students to the fundamentals of DNA, explaining where it is found and how it dictates our traits. But the real excitement started when they asked: What do we have in common with a banana?
The first hands-on experiment tackled this mystery. Using everyday materials, students extracted DNA from a banana, watching in awe as the invisible blueprint of life became tangible before their eyes. They discovered that despite vast differences between species, the fundamental building blocks of life are surprisingly similar.
The exploration didn’t stop there. In the second part of the session, students peered through a microscope to observe stained tissue samples. From the intricate structures of lung tissue stained with H&E to the detailed organization of cells, they marveled at the unseen complexity within their own bodies.
By the end of the event, students left not only with a deeper understanding of biology but also with a sense of wonder—an appreciation for the invisible yet essential world that defines all living beings. Through this interactive experience, the Tsoumakidou Lab transformed science into an adventure, making complex biological concepts both accessible and unforgettable.
